The Beavan Building, Byker, Newcastle for Byker Bridge Housing Association

Beavan’s department store opened in 1910 and was a major attraction on Shields Road, Byker, Newcastle.  But it has been vacant and deteriorating for the last four years.  Recognised by Newcastle City Council as a locally listed building and fondly thought of by the local residents, it was taken over by Byker Bridge Housing Association in 2008.  A £3.2m project has turned the upper floors into social housing flats with shops planned for the ground  floor.  To meet Government guidelines that new social housing is 25% more carbon efficient than Building Regulations require, solar panels have been installed and heat is recovered from the extracted air in each flat.
